Meet the stars of Team Guernsey
Members of the public will have the chance to be inspired by some of the stars of Guernsey’s Commonwealth Games Team at the Guernsey Sports Commission’s upcoming Utmost Community Sports Fun Day.
Silver medallist and bowls star Lucy Beere will be joined on stage by boxer Billy Le Poullain and sprinter Abi Galpin at the event on Saturday 3rd September at Saumarez Park.
“We were talking to colleagues at Education, Sport & Culture about how we could publicly celebrate some of the outstanding performances of Team Guernsey in the Birmingham Games and quickly realised that our big community event provided the perfect opportunity to share some of their stories,’ said Nicky Will, the Commission’s Communications Director and organiser of the day.
“Our Fun Day is all about encouraging all members of the community to give sport a try and what better way to feel inspired than listening to how some of our top performing sports men and women started their sporting journeys and what motivates them to be successful.”
Not only will members of Team Guernsey be helping their sports engage with all those who come along on the day, they will also take part in a question and answer session so that the public can find out more about what makes them tick.
“We are going to be taking to the stage at around 3 o’clock on the afternoon for an informal interview with Lucy, Billy and Abi to celebrate their amazing achievements in Birmingham and to ask them to share some of their insights into what it means to be representing their island at such a prestigious event,’ said Nicky.
“We would encourage everyone to come along on the day, try out some of our 20+ sports and then stay around to help us celebrate Team Guernsey’s amazing achievements and of course get a look at Lucy’s silver medal. Unfortunately Ala Chalmers can’t make it as he’s back in the UK but we’re hoping to be joined by other members of Team Guernsey on the day.”
The event is free to attend and runs from 12 noon to 4pm at Saumarez Park with the Team Guernsey celebration event at 3pm. People are encouraged to walk, cycle or catch the bus to the event as parking is limited.
