IoD Mid Term 2024

The Guernsey Branch of the Institute of Directors (IoD) will focus its 2024 Mid-Term event on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and corporate governance. The annual event will take place on Wednesday, 13 March from 7:45am-10am, at St Pierre Park.

The morning event, AI in the Boardroom: Navigating a New Frontier in Governance, will welcome two specialist speakers: Bob Semple, Chartered Director and Consultant at the Corporate Governance Institute, will be in Guernsey, and Dr Roger Barker, Director of Policy and Corporate Governance at the IoD, is joining online.

The speakers will explore AI technologies’ ethical, legal and governance challenges, and attendees will gain a deeper understanding of AI’s potential impact on business models. Following the presentations, the audience will have a chance to ask questions.

Bob Semple

Bob Semple worked at PwC for over 35 years, most recently as a partner responsible for governance and risk management services. He is now a director and an independent corporate governance consultant.

Dr Roger Barker (pictured) is the IoD’s Director of Policy and Corporate Governance. He has worked across Europe in banking and, most recently, specialising in governance.

Dr Barker has a doctorate from Oxford University and taught Politics at Merton College Oxford; he has also served as a UK member of the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels.

Glen Tonks, Chair of the IoD Guernsey Branch, said: “This very topical subject continues the theme of last year’s event, which coincided with the launch of many accessible Gen AI platforms. Since that event, the technology has grown exponentially and has risen up the boardroom agenda.

“In our recent IoD member survey, business leaders identified AI as one of their current top priorities, and we hope this event will help boards understand how they can integrate the technology into their strategic thinking and governance frameworks.”

The event is supported by headline sponsor Carey Olsen, breakfast sponsor Newgate Compliance, and event sponsors, Core Fund Services, Grant Thornton and Resolution IT.

Tom Carey, Managing Partner of Carey Olsen in Guernsey, headline sponsor of the event, said: “The IoD are tackling a very important topic at this year’s mid-term event. The development of AI is progressing at such a pace that businesses will need to adapt quickly to keep up and stay competitive. The IoD have secured two excellent speakers to cover this subject and we look forward to hearing from them how AI is shaping the corporate governance landscape now and for the future.”

Event sponsor, Rachel Gardiner, Head of Prescribed Roles at Newgate Compliance, said: “We’re delighted the IoD has chosen AI and governance as its Mid-Term focus. Our recent survey amongst senior regulation and compliance executives shows that not only is AI revolutionising almost every aspect of financial services, but it is already being used by the many alternative fund managers they partner with in their compliance and risk procedures.”
