IMpractical: An exhibition by Abi Overland
Jaro Gallery is delighted to present ‘IMpractical,’ an extraordinary exhibition by acclaimed fine art illustrator Abi Overland.
A graduate of the University of Brighton, Abi has spent the last decade creating a distinctive body of work, merging the worlds of fine art and illustration with meticulous dot-work and line-work techniques. Her creations, which often depict surreal and otherworldly dreamscapes, invite the viewer to lose themselves in a realm of aesthetic joy—a central theme that permeates her work.
Abi’s remarkable career has seen her nominated as Tastemaker of the Year at the Jersey Style Awards, and her illustrations have graced the front cover of Penguin Roundhouse’s The Zoo by Isobel Charman. Her work also adorns the walls of Red Roaster in Brighton, a mural that has been recognized by The New York Times as one of the top 100 places to visit in Europe. Featured in prestigious publications such as Vogue UK, Elle Decoration NL, House Beautiful online, and Glamour magazine online, Abi’s work continues to garner international attention.
‘IMpractical’ marks a significant milestone in Abi’s career as she offers, for the first time ever, the opportunity to acquire original drawings from her collection, alongside hand-finished limited edition prints and a unique series of glass sculptures. This exhibition is a reclamation of the term “impractical,” a word synonymous with Abi’s approach to life and art. Over the past ten years, Abi has embraced the absurdity of impracticality, finding joy in the laborious process of creation, even when it defies conventional business models.
Art, as Abi asserts, is inherently impractical—it exists for joy, not utility. ‘IMpractical’ is a celebration of this philosophy. Complementing her illustrations, Abi will unveil a collection of one-off glass sculptures crafted from objects discovered at Acorn Enterprises, a testament to her commitment to sustainability and the joys of second-hand finds. To further this cause, a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of these sculptures will be donated back to Acorn Enterprises, underscoring Abi’s dedication to giving back to the local community.
Joining Abi Overland in this captivating exhibition are four exceptional artists whose work adds depth and diversity to the show. Jersey-based artists Gillian Linden, Jayne Herbert, Rick Jones will each showcase their unique artistic perspectives, bringing a rich local flavor to the event. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome Muse More Than Flowers with her unique crepe paper flower designs plus Ella Cook from South Africa, whose evocative pieces contribute an international dimension to the exhibition.
Together, these artists present a compelling collection that celebrates the joy of creation and the beauty of the impractical. We invite you to explore this diverse and vibrant exhibition at JARO, immerse yourself in the fantasy world of Abi Overland and her fellow artists.
