Immersive Sound Experience: Johnny Got His Gun

A unique immersive installation in Jersey will use bone conduction to create a narrative audio experience inside your head.

Immersive Sound Experience: Johnny Got His Gun will ask the question: “If we were deprived of all our senses, how would we experience reality?”

The piece, which is inspired by Dalton Trumbo’s 1938 anti-war novel ‘Johnny Got His Gun’ has been created by sound artist and theatre director Jonny Danciger with support from ArtHouse Jersey.

Through the controlled vibration of the skeleton, this installation will create a narrative audio piece lasting around 15 minutes, experienced through the internal body of the participant.

As this installation works using bone conduction – the same technology that drives certain hearing implants – this audio installation will be accessible to many hearing-impaired individuals.

Participants will lie in a custom ‘sound bed’ built to exploit sensory phenomena through bone conduction and to create a soundscape that can be heard without the need for sound to enter the ear itself.

The installation is designed for one person at a time and will run from Tuesday 9th May to Saturday 13th May at the Greve de Lecq Barracks. Tickets are limited.

Commenting on the installation, Jonny said: “The novel that has inspired this piece was a response to the First World War, yet the perspective it provides is illuminating and relevant to all modern warfare. It feels particularly poignant to be launching this installation on Liberation Day, as we mark Jersey’s liberation from Nazi occupation in 1945 and reflect on the horrific experiences of so many people during wartime, including those currently suffering in Ukraine.

“I hope that the sensory aspect of experiencing this installation will not only be interesting and novel in itself, but that it can bring people closer to the story and encourage us to think about the real human cost of war. I am very grateful to ArtHouse Jersey for making this project possible.”
