Exhibition: Manipulation – The art of leather by Emmanuelle Midmer
This is the first showing of the beautiful hand-crafted art on leather by Emmanuelle Midmer.
Emmanuelle told Channel Eye: “Growing up in Jersey, surrounded by her history and magical coastlines, I have been privileged to be exposed to a host of visual arts, and inspirational people. Creativity has since been my refuge.
“A serendipitous friendship introduced me to the basics of leather tooling; a heritage craft which mostly survives only in the American West. I developed a passion for the manipulation of leather – engraving, embossing, moulding and carving.
“I work towards the fantastical. Rather than using traditional Western motifs, I embrace more European designs in my work.
“This collection is inspired by the illustrations of one of my heroes, Hildegard of Bingen. An extraordinary visionary, composer, leader and healer, her theology draws on a quintessentially feminine creative power she called Viriditas.
“The pieces displayed explore birth and growth, nascent and bursting with life and promise. Accompanying the leather icons are smaller pieces that will make beautiful gifts and generational treasures.”
The exhibition opens on Thursday 23rd May, from 6:30 to 8:30 with a buffet and bar.
