Child, Youth and Community Tribunal: Drop in session for potential volunteers
The Child, Youth and Community Tribunal (the CYCT) is looking to recruit new volunteers as part of its latest Tribunal Member recruitment drive, as it continues to make a difference to the lives of children in the Bailiwick.
Part of the Children’s Tribunal System, the Tribunal offers children and young people in need of guidance or support the opportunity to have their situation heard and have their say outside of a court environment.
Decisions are made by a panel of three Tribunal Members who, on the basis of the facts and information presented, decide what action is required in the best interests of the child. The Members are required to make an informed and unbiased decision which is legally binding.
Tribunal Members do not need formal qualifications but must be team players between the ages of 21 and 70 with the ability to listen, learn and work open-mindedly with children, young people and their families.
Volunteers will be required to undergo 45 hours of pre-service training before being appointed by the Royal Court. Following this, they must sit on two hearings a month as well as attend a minimum of two further mandatory training sessions each year to maintain their knowledge and skills.
President of the CYCT, Ashley Rawles, said: ‘’The Bailiwick is very fortunate to have such a bespoke and holistic approach to the welfare of children and young people and it would be nothing without the dedicated work of our Tribunal Members.
‘’We are extremely lucky that Guernsey and Alderney are host to a plethora of amazing people willing to give up their time to support their local community and I am hopeful that, once again, we will see a diverse range of people put themselves forward to ensure we can continue this essential and valuable work.’’
The CYCT will be hosting drop-in sessions for those interested to find out more. These will be held on:
- Wednesday 6th November 2024 6pm-8pm at the Rugby Club
- Saturday 9th November 2024 10am- 12pm at Les Cotils
