Candles on the beach
On Saturday 23 May 2026, our community will gather on St Brelade’s Bay Beach for Candles on the Beach – a moving tribute where we light candles as part of a ceremony in honour of our loved ones. This special evening offers a chance to reflect, celebrate, and be together in shared remembrance.
Emily Churchill, Spiritual Care Lead at Hospice and host of the service, said: “There is something especially supportive about sharing our experiences of grief in the presence of others. When you come together for the sole purpose of remembering and the stranger next to you – who does not know the detail of your story – understands why being there matters. Candles on the Beach offers exactly this, in a beautiful place, and with our community lighting their candles because it matters.”
Anya Nightingale-Bataille, Events and Fundraising Officer, said: “This is such a great event to see the Jersey community come together and share an evening to remember those who are no longer with us as the sun goes down and we illuminate the beach with their light.”
Spaces and candles can be reserved until 23:59 on Friday 22 May. Walk‑ins are welcome on the night, though candle numbers may be limited.
The event is supported by the Island’s funeral homes, Co-op Funeral Care by De Gruchy, Maillards Funeral Directors, and Pitcher & Le Quesne Funeral Directors. After last year’s event, they said, “Every year it gets better, and it was such a perfect evening, hugely emotional and poignant, and the whole thing was beautifully organised. The soloist and flute player were outstanding, and I defy anyone not to have had a tear in their eye during those performances.”
