Airmic and GIIA’s Guernsey Conference 2024
The Guernsey International Insurance Association (GIIA) has, for the first time, joined forces with AIRMIC to stage a one-day conference in Guernsey.
Titled ‘Positioning for the Future’, the free-to-attend conference will take place on 24th and 25th June and features a packed schedule which will connect risk managers, captive owners, those considering setting up a captive, brokers, board members, advisers and insurers.
Delegates will hear from a line-up of speakers at both plenary sessions and nine different breakout sessions. The conference finale will be a summer gala dinner.
The event’s keynote speaker will be General Sir Richard Shirreff. Sir Richard rose through the ranks to become NATO’s Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, he is the Co-Founder Of Strategia Worldwide Global Geopolitical & Strategy Think Tank, a Bestselling Author Of ‘War With Russia’ and an Honorary Fellow Of Oxford University.
Sir Richard has a proven record of leading dynamic change management making him well placed to support corporate leaders in the design and execution of strategy to manage complex risks. His keynote speech will delve into various intricacies and provide his thoughts on the current geopolitical landscape.
Break-out sessions have been designed to offer something for everyone and in the morning we are excited to hear from the Red Cross, which recently used Guernsey to set up its disaster relief financing vehicle together with their broker and Manager Aon. EY will moderate a session with their UK Insurance Tax Leader Jenny Coletta and the Director of Guernsey’s Revenue Service discussing the changing Global Tax Environment.
Zurich and Allianz will join a panel with McGills to explore the future of fronting and reinsurance in the context of captives. The topic of climate change and opportunities for the captive industry in contributing to the wider ESG agenda with a panel moderated by PwC and including representatives from LSEG, Ravenscroft and SRS.
One of the most important elements of insurance, paying claims, will be addressed by Howdens running a session with participants from Network Rail and ARM. Local law firms and consultants will run a session with case studies looking at the flexibility of Guernsey’s corporate structures serving captives looking to metamorphosise.
Following lunch a plenary session will take place, moderated by Richard Cutcher who will review real-world case studies from The Hut Group, Landsec and BAT, which all have different captives in Guernsey.
The afternoon break-out session welcomes Gallaghers for a focus session on the practical side of cyber risk alongside a session providing a deep dive into parametric insurance. McGill and Augment Risk representatives will be joined by Dr Ismail from ASR Re to discuss recent trends. Coverage Matters and Spring Insure are joining forces to examine how PI and D&O coverage meets the needs of captive directors.

In addition to the main event, the conference will be opened by Airmic Chair, Angela Lannetta, at a drinks reception on Monday evening.
Airmic conferences are also well known for their focus on wellness. GIIA will host a ‘wellness hour’ ahead of the Conference between 7.30 and 8.30 am, with several activities and breakfast at La Vallette Bathing Pools overlooking Castle Cornet.
The conference will end with the Lloyds-sponsored gala dinner at Beau Sejour from 6.30 pm. The traditional annual GIIA dinner has been transformed into a relaxed summer event celebrating local produce, music and successes in the Guernsey industry.
