À Bétôt – Expressions of a Wish exhibition
Welcome to the summer season at Private & Public Gallery with the first of three major exhibitions by outstanding young emerging British artists, all of whom are starting to attract the attentions of major international collectors.
À Bétôt – Expressions of a Wish is a showcase for 24 new paintings by the Jersey born artist Danny Romeril who is now based in the UK but has recently exhibited in Los Angeles, Stuttgart and at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
Drawing upon art history its clear to see the influence of the early 20th century German Expressionists in Danny’s work such as the Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke groups whose Expressionist artists sought to portray emotions and subjective interpretations or people and places in a representational manner.
The term Expressionism refers to a creative style in which the artist seeks to depict, not objective reality, but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events arouse within them.
In describing his paintings Danny said: “I want to make paintings that reflect a lived experience of a place, not a literal representation of it. The colours and shapes which build the pictures are more impressions of a space rather than a diagnostic reflection”.
With additional Expressionist masterworks works by internationally acclaimed artists William Tillyer, John Monks, Damien Hirst, Jason Martin, Simon Casson, Nicholas Romeril and Maria Tarrant on display this exhibition provides an insight into the artistic influences of one of the greatest artistic movements of the 20th century.
