ArtHouse Jersey is delighted to announce the exhibition of new work by artist Juliet St John Nicolle, entitled ‘Viewing Covid Through Autistic Eyes’.

The exhibition takes place at ArtHouse Jersey (at Greve de Lecq Barracks, St Mary) between Saturday 19th June and Sunday 27th June.

Juliet St John Nicolle is a self-taught, neurodivergent artist who was diagnosed with Asperger’s when she was 50 years old. Since a very young age Juliet has drawn and painted, using her creativity as a means to express her experience of the neurotypical world and communicate it to others.

Awarded funding from the ArtHouse Jersey Funding scheme, she has created new print works for this upcoming exhibition, alongside a series of paintings she created during lockdown with over fifty new works on show. The work also makes up a new hardback book featuring six etchings of her hand coloured drawings, the originals of which will all be on display at the exhibition.

In addition to the show, Juliet will be holding a series of talks on Saturday 19th June at 2pm, Wednesday 23th June at 7pm and Sunday 27th June at 2pm) where people can learn about Juliet’s experience of the pandemic first hand. These talks are free entry and there is no need to book.

Juliet St John Nicolle, explained: “With a late diagnosis of Asperger’s, I can sometimes find aspects of the neurotypical world challenging. My art is a means to express my experience of the neurotypical world and to communicate to others my own inner rich world. The artwork develops organically from what neurotypicals would call  ‘imagination’, but for me it stems from my very own more ethereal world, which is more real to me than the neurotypical world. My artworks serve as conduits between these two worlds and the process of producing them enables me to achieve a balance between them.”

Director of ArtHouse Jersey, Tom Dingle said: “We’re delighted to be able to host this exhibition for Juliet. She is a fascinating artist who invites us into an unknown and very personal experience, giving us a rare insight into a rich and colourful inner world that can only be communicated through the medium of art.

“I would wholeheartedly encourage everyone to come along to see this new work, and spend some time with Juliet as she shares her journey through Covid from her own unique perspective.”

‘Viewing COVID Through Autistic Eyes’ takes place on Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th June at ArtHouse Jersey

Greve de Lecq Barracks, St Mary.  Open Monday to Friday 11am to 4.30pm and Saturday & Sunday 10.30am to 5.30pm.
