This Saturday 15th May 2021, between 9:00am and midday, the Guernsey Yacht Club (GYC) opens its doors to anybody who wants to find out more about the getting out on the water.
Commodore Anna Rivers told Channel Eye: “This year as part of the Guernsey Together and Stronger Together initiatives, we have invited organisations and charities involved with the sea to join us and be part of our Annual Open Day.
“We have our neighbours, the Sailing Trust offering trips in their sailing hawks and ribs, the Guernsey Rowing Club will be testing endurance on their indoor rower, together with the Blue Dolphins Sub-Aqua group, Bailiwick Dolfin Research, Guernsey Windsurfing Association, RNLI, Mini Cat CI, Brig Ribs and the Guernsey Boat Owners Association.
“The GYC sections will be showcasing what the club offers including junior have-a-go sessions on the pond, adult dinghy sailing, RYA courses, and our unrivalled safety evenings. We also hope to show some of the latest developments in the sport with a foiling dinghy as well as some fun competitions”.
Anna continued: ”We are situated in an enviable situation, from the club and deck outside we have fantastic views of all the activity in the Little Russel and beyond. We have our dinghy park right outside, and the model yacht pond opposite, with the pond being the perfect place for our younger sailors to learn in a safe environment”.
Hannah Cockle from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) said “Getting out on the water has a huge amount of benefits, no matter what your age, background or ability. Outdoor activities, including sailing and windsurfing, are hugely beneficial for both physical and mental health”
This year the GYC was shortlisted as one of only 10 clubs in the British Isles for the RYA Club of the Year, and has recently been made a British Youth Sailing Club in addition to an Onboard champion as it continues to build on its junior and youth offering.
Everybody is welcome at the Castle Emplacement and have a look around. In addition to the demonstrations, there will be refreshments and cakes available throughout the morning in the clubhouse.
