A new community crowdfunding charity officially launches by inviting women of Guernsey to join them for their first event.
100 Women Who Care, a charitable funding organisation for women has officially launched in Guernsey, welcoming members to join and then attend their first event. This is taking place on 3rd June 2021 at St Pierre Park Hotel and the event will raise a significant donation for local charities whilst introducing a fantastic new way to approach collective charitable giving on the island.
The well-established alliance, 100 Women Who Care was launched in the US in 2006 as a simple way to raise money quickly for local charities in communities. It currently operates all over the world bringing women from diverse backgrounds, ages and ethnic groups together to give something back to the communities in which they live.
The focus is raising awareness of underfunded local charities and charitable giving to the community
The focus is raising awareness of underfunded local charities and charitable giving to the community and was created to raise the profile of smaller charities who need donations as well as allowing busy women who want to give something back to charity but don’t have the time.
At each quarterly event, up to three local charities will be invited to the 100 Women Who Care event to share their cause and story with the group. Each woman will donate £100 and then confidentially vote using their phones where they would like their donation to go. The voting app distributes the collective donation of £10,000 based on the percentage of votes each charity receives (with no charity leaving without a small donation). All monies raised are donated with overheads covered by event sponsors. Members are requested to attend a minimum of one event per year but are welcome to attend each quarter. The hope is to raise more awareness of each charity as well as raise much-needed funds for local causes.
Set up by five professional women based in Guernsey, 100 Women Who Care has a clear focus on giving back to the local community. The board of directors comprises Amber Burns (Chair), Zoë Melton, Karen Haith, Stephanie Hamel and Patricia White. Their mission is to harness the generosity of women in the community and raise funds for those in greatest need as well as create a unique networking space for women to share professional and personal knowledge and offer support.
Amber Burns, the Chairperson, explained to Channel Eye: “Many women in the community of Guernsey want to support charities and give something back but are unable to find the time whilst juggling a busy home and work life. We came together and recognised a local need for a charitable event that brings women of all ages, races, professions and backgrounds together to support each other and provide a significant contribution to local charities in the community of Guernsey.
“When I moved to the island, everyone was so welcoming and supportive, I am thrilled to be launching this initiative to help give back to Guernsey. We are very blessed to be living on such a lovely island and being able to give back to the community is what a lot of people want to do but don’t know how to go about it.”
Zoë Melton added, “We are delighted to have set a date for our first event (3 June 2021). It is such a great way to harness the collective fundraising power of women in Guernsey – by each of us contributing we can make a massive difference to charities in the Bailiwick regularly and at the same time members will be meeting new people at every event and extending their networks on the island.”
