Butterfield has confirmed its sponsorship of The Guernsey Velo Club’s Delancey Flyers 2022 Racing League, investing in the island’s future cycling stars for a second year.
The League, which runs from May through to mid-August, kicked off this month with more than 100 cyclists participating in the first race of the series. Members, aged between six and 14, gather every Wednesday to race a mountain bike course at Delancey Park.
The Flyers also host a training group which meets in between races to learn new skills and develop race technique.
Guernsey Velo Club President Alex Margison said: “We’re tremendously thankful to Butterfield for its support and are very pleased to have them as a corporate partner for another year. Their sponsorship allows us to fund essential resources for the races – from ramps and course tape to insurance and park maintenance. It has also enabled us to train a number of our volunteers as coaches through British Cycling, which means our riders can be coached in smaller groups for a more focused and dedicated session.
“The League is a really fun way for young islanders to discover cycling, and benefit from the thrills and lessons of engaging in competitive sport. We’re hoping to extend the racing season this year with additional events later in the summer at a different location, giving racers the opportunity to put their skills to the test on a new course.”
Richard Saunders, Managing Director of Butterfield in the Channel Islands, said: “Engaging young people in sport is hugely valuable for a number of reasons. Besides the obvious physical benefits, it can help boost self-esteem, develop social skills, teach discipline and build resilience. We’re proud to support an initiative which gives children in our community the opportunity to explore and push their capabilities in a friendly, local environment.”
