ArtHouse Jersey is looking for Jersey-based dancers with backgrounds in any genre of dance, for a choreographic project aiming to bring to life some of the stories celebrating Liberation 75. These stories were discovered during the research process of ‘The Face of Liberation’, the art project which resulted in a large scale mosaic made up of 6000 faces from Jersey’s past and present.
ArtHouse Jersey has drafted in the choreography expertise of Carolyn Rose, a Canada born, Jersey-based ex-dancer from Ballet Nacional de Cuba, Les Ballets de Monte Carlo, and the Norwegian National Ballet. Carolyn is currently in the process of choosing which of the many stories to work with and how to tell them using the talent of a number of locally based dancers.
The creative process itself will consist of 10-12 workshops over a six-week period in November/December, located primarily at the Barracks at Grève de Lecq. All Jersey Government COVID restrictions and recommendations will be observed.
Any ages over 16 years are welcome to apply. Applicants should be comfortable with being filmed and photographed, performing live, and a small amount of improvisation. They must also be able to pick up and retain simple choreographic sequences.
ArtHouse Jersey Director Tom Dingle said “After a fantastic response to The Face of Liberation we’re very excited to be able to keep the spirit of the artwork, and indeed Liberation 75, alive. It is important to us to not only create this fantastic opportunity for dancers who are looking to work on a unique and professional project right now, but also to harness and celebrate some of the people at the heart of these stories which made up the overall Liberation experience at the time. Some were sad, some brave, some funny, some poignant, but all are true Jersey human experiences that deserve to be told and understood. We can’t wait to see what evolves through the dancers’ collective interpretation of these tales”.
Dancers are asked if interested, please send a brief written or video outline of your background in dance, your reasons for wanting to be part of the project, and what you feel you would be able to bring to the table. Please send this to me, Carrie Cooper at [email protected] by 10am on Friday 30 October. The first session will take place the following week on Friday 6 November.
