Business leaders are to get an insight into new management skills, with a focus on apprenticeships, at the next Chartered Management Institute (CMI) Conference.
The Conference, which takes place today, in St Helier, marks the launch of the CMI’s programme for 2019 and Jersey’s first CMI Apprenticeship Programme.
Speakers at the event include Shelley Kendrick, Managing Director, Kendrick Rose, who will address the issues of recruiting and retaining talent in Jersey.
Shelley has extensive experience of the recruitment market, with a long career in financial services HR and nearly 10 years running her own executive recruitment agency. Shelley also chairs the Institute of Directors Work Shadowing Scheme and is part of the selection committee for Board Apprentice.
She said: “We live in an era where we can expect to work longer than ever before, in careers that arelikely to change dramatically over our lifetimes. This makes it increasingly important to keep learning as we work, improving our skills, and developing our talents as the jobs we are in change. Roles at a certain level often involve management skills and the right qualifications can help people be better prepared to take on these roles and to progress.
“As we have seen with the IoD programmes, apprenticeships are not just for people at the start of their careers, but for people at any stage who change careers and need experience to enter a new field of work. With many Jersey firms looking at more innovative ways to attract and retain talent, apprenticeship programmes and management qualifications are an important area to consider.”
The conference will also feature presentations by Claire Kingham, Benest & Syvret; Daniel O’Driscoll, Deutsche Banking International; Natalie Claire, Natalie Claire Consulting; and Chloe Anderson, Feel Unique. Ross Edgar from Skills Board Jersey, and Jackie Barette, People Performance Consulting, will launch the Apprenticeship Scheme.
Jackie said: “The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) is the only professional body dedicated to promote the highest standard in management and leadership excellence through the journey from supervisor to middle manager to senior leaders. Over 100,000 managers and leaders use its services daily. CMI’s practical qualifications are ideal for managers and leaders at all levels and remain the only awarding body and independent body recognised by Privy Council to award Chartered Managers status (CMgr MCMI).
“Jersey has a great number of apprenticeship programmes in place but no management orleadership programme. People Performance Consulting Ltd (PPC) has been working with Skills Jersey Trackers to develop a programme which is suitable for the needs of the Island and business, whichwill give aspiring managers the skills, knowledge and capability to become our leaders of tomorrow.”
