Photographs of the Channel Islands most loved local trees are to star in a 2018 calendar to support two local charities that work to protect trees.
RUBiS supported the Trees We Love photographic competition which received nearly 100 entries from islanders keen for their camerawork to be given star billing.
Money raised from the 15,000 calendars will support Jersey Trees for Life and Guernsey Trees for Life.
The overall winners of the adult category were Tamsin Bradbury from Jersey and Trevor Mahy from Guernsey (whose picture we’ve featured in this article), as well as Bea Simmonds from Jersey and Ziggy Pearce from Guernsey in the junior category.
Trevor Mahy who captured the beauty of a weeping willow tree at Les Rouvets Fishing Lake, in St Saviours, Guernsey said: “My son in law, Chris Bale has recently taken over the day to day running of site and is developing it as a nature reserve to further enhance the area for wildlife. It is a very special and tranquil place and I love spending time there. I was delighted with the news that my willow photo had been chosen as one of the winning shots and would be appearing in the 2018 calendar. I had the call from Guernsey Trees For Life the same week as I was going into hospital for an operation, so it gave me a real boost just when I needed it.”
Other photos featured in the 2018 calendar include Matt Bartlett (Jersey), Katherine Ure (Jersey), Richard Picot (Jersey), Paula Banks (Jersey), Simon Crowcroft (Jersey), Vicki Brouard (Guernsey), Sue Baudains (Jersey), Jim Leatt (Jersey), Pat Clarke (Jersey) and Beth Leatt (Jersey).
Nick Crolla, Head of Sales and Marketing for RUBiS Channel Islands said: “The new RUBiS Calendars will be printed and sent to customers, as well as being available to the general public on RUBiS garage forecourts from the first week of December and they are always very popular”.
The announcement of the winners coincides with this week’s National Tree Week, marking the start of the winter tree planting season across the Channel Islands. Both Guernsey and Jersey Trees For Life will be busy over the coming months working within their respective communities to celebrate the value of trees, plant more and care for, protect and appreciate the ones that we already have.
Vanessa Crispini-Adams, Guernsey Trees For Life’s Education officer, said: “The great thing about working with RUBiS on the Trees We Love calendar is that it reminds us of the special role trees play within the Channel Islands, not just during National Tree Week, but throughout the year.”
