
Jurat of the Court of Alderney
A vacancy has arisen for the appointment of a Jurat to the Court of Alderney.
Chairwoman of the Court, Tracy Jean, said: “being a Jurat in our small unique community is both a huge privilege and a solemn responsibility. It requires the trust and the confidence of the community to carry out the role without fear or favour. Our Jurats have always carried out their duties safe in the knowledge that they are serving the community and that they do have the trust and confidence of the community. It is a very rewarding role.”
The Court of Alderney
The Court of Alderney is responsible for the administration of Justice in Alderney.
The Court deals with both criminal and civil court proceedings.
The Jurats of the Court of Alderney
- In the absence of a Jury system, Jurats in Alderney are required to decide cases based on fact and the relevant Law.
- The Jurats are advised by the Greffier as the Clerk to the Court.
- Full training will be given to the successful candidate.
- It is an unpaid role.
- There is currently a total of eight Jurats, who sit as and when required.
Qualifications required
There are no formal qualifications required. The ability to listen carefully to evidence objectively with an open mind and reach a decision based on the evidence, whilst being guided by the Greffier on matters of Law are the principle requirements of the role. A good dollop of “common sense” is a very important dynamic based on your own life experiences. The candidate is also required to be a permanent Alderney resident.

A short listing and interview process will be carried out by the Jurats Appointment Panel (consisting of the Chairwoman of the Court of Alderney, the President of the States of Alderney, the Greffier and the Lieutenant Governors representative in the States of Alderney) who will submit the name of the appropriate applicant to His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor for his approval as required by the Government of Alderney Law 2004. The successful candidate will be appointed by instrument, under the hand of His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor.
