Guernsey Cancer Support announces the launch of their morning group sessions, beginning Thursday 2 September, at 10.30 am at Les Cotils.
The new sessions have come about following feedback from members, some of whom found evening meetings challenging for different reasons.
Anyone touched by cancer will receive a warm welcome at these drop-in meetings, including patients, carers and family members. The morning sessions will take place on the first Thursday of each month and have been made possible thanks to a generous donation from, JT Guernsey, who chose the group as their charity for 2021.
These new get-togethers are in addition to the charity’s current evening support sessions, which take place at 7.30pm on the third Thursday of each month and often include a guest speaker, sharing experience and advise. Anyone can attend either or both sessions, which are hosted by the charity’s volunteers who provide invaluable support and insight into the many ways that cancer can affect the lives of islanders.
Guernsey Cancer Support Chair, Gill Syvret-Berboda, said: “We have considered holding a morning meeting for some time. Having spoken to our members, they suggested that this would be more feasible for many members of the community. Circumstances can often mean that people are too tired to attend of an evening, particularly when going through treatment or struggling with their health, especially as the evenings become colder and darker.”
“We are a small organisation and despite running for 11 years, many islanders still don’t know who we are and what we do. Since our partnership with JT began we’ve enjoyed a much larger profile and are receiving more calls than ever from people needing our support. The engagement and reaction we are seeing on social media has been incredible.”
“JT’s kind initial donation will go towards the room hire each month and refreshments for our members, meaning we can have an even greater positive impact on islanders who are living with cancer.”
Deputy Managing Director, JT Guernsey, Tamara O’Brien, said: “Guernsey Cancer Support is a very special and unique charity, made up of people who have walked in the shoes of those now seeking their support. They offer a lifeline to individuals and families in need and as a local business, we are immensely proud to be their partner and support their vital work.”
“We understand the importance of bringing the community together, connecting islanders who are going through the toughest of times. I’m so pleased that JT has been able to help share the work of the GCS team with the whole community, it’s a service that means so much to so many.”
