Less than one month now remains for those wishing to submit an entry to Guernsey Electricity’s Power to the People Fund.

Launched in November 2020, the biannual initiative has been developed for individuals and charity organisations wishing to engage in projects that benefit the environment and local community.

Entries for the first round of the fund are due on 31st January 2021.

The fund offers grants to groups across Guernsey’s Bailiwick and is aimed at environmental initiatives that are aligned with the four pillars of the company’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy (affordable and clean energy, climate action, healthy ecosystems and education, awareness and skills) which, in turn, contribute towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Sally-Ann David, Guernsey Electricity’s chief operating officer, said a diverse range of submissions had already been received.  “We have been very excited to see the entries already in for the Power to the People Fund.

“From a reusable cup scheme, sea shore litter analysis projects, to a community garden kitchen and renewable energy system kits and educational tools for schools, the ideas have been very impressive and highlight the number of Islanders who share our own aspirations for a more sustainable future.

“We are keen to choose projects that bring the most benefit to our community and environment so the fund of £6,000 may be allocated between a few initiatives or, if there is one entry which will deliver significant impact, we could award the entire amount to one project. We are still open for entries and hope this initiative will provide people with the opportunity to make a positive impact, however big or small, on our wider community.”

The fund is open to community groups, charities, social enterprises, cooperatives, schools, individuals, and amateur sports clubs from across the Guernsey Bailiwick.

The process comprises an online submission via Guernsey Electricity’s website, followed by an assessment of the suitability of each application based on set criteria. Successful applicants will be notified by 31st March 2021 and funds are allocated twice per year, £6,000 in March and September.

Charities and partners that have previously been supported by Guernsey Electricity will also be able to apply for funding provided they align with the four pillars.
