Students pursuing a higher education in a field of study relating to the protection and improvement of island environments will have the opportunity to apply for Butterfield’s annual post-graduate scholarship worth USD $25,000 per year.
The scholarship, which is tenable for up to four years, will be awarded to one deserving student from one of the following locations: Jersey, Guernsey, the UK, Bermuda, Canada, the Cayman Islands, The Bahamas, Switzerland, Mauritius, or Singapore.
Ryan Dowling, who is from Bermuda, was awarded last year’s scholarship to pursue his Masters of Science in Carbon Management with a focus on environmental sustainability at The University of Edinburgh. Having already achieved a BSc in Business Administration and an MSc in Strategic Management from Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University in the Netherlands, Ryan wanted to pursue a Masters to gain a deeper understanding of carbon market investments in order to fully enter the field of impact investing.
“I applied for the Butterfield scholarship to help finance my post-graduate studies. Had I not received the scholarship, I would have had to take out a student loan and get a part-time job, which would have been detrimental to my studies. It was fantastic to be selected for the scholarship and my studies are going really well. My course ends mid-August and my aim is to finish with a Distinction (honours), which I’m on track to do. Once I have completed my studies, I hope to enter the field of low carbon and green investments, which I’m extremely passionate about,” said Ryan.
He added: “Transitioning capital from a fossil fuel infrastructure to a low/zero carbon infrastructure is crucial to attain the Paris Climate Agreement and to ensure the world’s transition to a low carbon economy. Butterfield’s scholarship has significantly helped me in pursuing my career, as I’m fully able to dedicate myself to my studies, networking and taking the first steps towards career opportunities. I’m eternally grateful to Butterfield for providing me with this scholarship, which has changed my life. I would absolutely encourage other students to apply.”
Richard Saunders, Managing Director, Channel Islands at Butterfield Bank, said: “We are delighted to offer this environmentally focused post-graduate scholarship to one deserving student each year. Ryan is an excellent example of how this scholarship can help students pursue their careers of choice. At Butterfield, we are committed to the betterment of the natural environment in the communities we call home, and investing in the future by promoting the pursuit of higher education. We look forward to receiving applications and supporting the next generation of environmental leaders.”
The deadline for applications is midnight on Friday 29 March 2019.
