With just one month to go, organisers of Guernsey’s Boxing Day Dip are encouraging islanders to take the plunge.
The traditional Boxing Day Dip sees thousands of islanders turn out to swim off the Festive excesses and give generously towards the upkeep of Guernsey’s popular Cheshire Home. Over £1,100,000 is needed annually to allow the Home to continue, and the Boxing Day event is a crucial fundraiser for the charity.
Last year, thousands turned out on Cobo Beach, covering the sand with fancy dress, Santa hats and enthusiastic cheerleaders, raising £9,368.
Rob Shepherd, Chairman at the Home, said: “This year’s Dip is due to be the biggest yet and I can’t wait to experience the fantastic atmosphere once again.
“I am very grateful to Skipton for their brand-new sponsorship, which has enabled us to expand the scope of the Dip this year. I look forward to seeing everyone at Cobo on Boxing Day at 9.30am.”
There are a number of ‘extras’ being added this year, including a free shuttle bus from Town, enabling participants to get to/from Cobo without having to worry about trying to park in the Cobo area. The free shuttle bus will run from North Beach car park to Cobo on a first-come, first-served basis, starting at 8am. The final return bus will depart from Mim’s Kiosk at 12.30pm.
In addition, the Guernsey Cheshire Home will have a Christmas stall in Market Square on Friday 17th December, selling special swimming caps and other items to raise funds.
Aaron Walden, Commercial Manager at Skipton said: “This much-loved Guernsey tradition is something we are extremely proud to sponsor, as it showcases the very best of Guernsey’s tight-knit community. Our sponsorship provides a donation to the Home and also enables the organisers to add a few extras, including a shuttle bus from Town. We are also very grateful to our colleagues who have volunteered to help on the day.”
As always, the Rockmount will be open for mulled wine and mince pies after the Dip.
There is no requirement to pre-register for the Dip, but swimmers are asked to be lined up on Cobo beach ready for the 9.30am start.
