ArtHouse Jersey is teaming up with the Société Jersiaise to find a professional artist to create a new public artwork which celebrates the historic organisation’s 150th anniversary.
Over the last 150 years, the Société Jersiaise has been a hub of academic research and discoveries and a driving force when it comes to learning more about the Island’s history, culture, language and environment.
To mark this milestone anniversary, the Société are offering a commission of up to £12,500 (including artist fee, materials, installation and any maintenance costs) to create the new work which will fit within an existing display site within the exterior wall on Pier Road. The work will be officially unveiled to the public as part of their 2023 year-long anniversary celebrations.
The submission process is open to professional artists living and working in Jersey or with a connection to the Island. The design for the artwork must consider the exterior wall location where the selected work will be installed, and be suitable for this environment. The deadline for artists to apply is midnight on Tuesday 6 June.
The work will take place through the summer and autumn and will be unveiled at the end of November 2023.
Director of ArtHouse Jersey, Tom Dingle, said of the partnership: “We’re delighted to be working with Société Jersiaise on the commissioning of this important artwork. The organisation has been at the very heart of Island life for 150 years and to help mark this with high quality art from an artist who truly understands the spirit of the Island and the importance of historic preservation, is only fitting.
“We would wholeheartedly encourage artists to think carefully about this opportunity. With so much heritage and passion at the core of Société’s work, there should be no shortage of inspiration when it comes to creating something truly special for this significant celebration”.
The Chief Executive of Société Jersiaise, Rebecca J. Bailhache, said: “Celebrating a century-and-a-half of research this year is hugely significant for the Société and the Island as a whole. As an organisation, we’re passionate about connecting islanders with Jersey’s rich cultural heritage and drawing the dots between past, present and future. So, we are delighted to have a public sculpture that will mark this special moment in our history for years to come. We’re so grateful to be partnering with ArtHouse Jersey on this project and we’re looking forward to receiving artists’ ideas for the site.“
