Nine lawyers from Appleby’s global Private Client & Trusts practice have been recognised in the 2024 edition of the Chambers and Partners High Net Worth Guide.
It means the Group has secured rankings across six of its global locations – Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Jersey. From an office perspective, the Private Client & Trusts teams in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the Isle of Man also gained their own department rankings.
Those individually recognised comprised:
- Bermuda – Senior Counsel Vanessa Schrum and Counsel Caljonah Smith
- British Virgin Islands – Partner Carlos de Serpa Pimentel
- Cayman Islands – Partner Carlos de Serpa Pimentel and Counsel Esmond Brown
- Guernsey – Counsel Paula Fry (pictured)
- Isle of Man – Counsel Erin Trimble-Cregeen
- Jersey – Partner Fraser Robertson, Counsel Nichola Brennan and Consultant Giles Corbin
- Carlos de Serpa Pimentel and Vanessa Schrum both achieved Band 1 rankings in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda respectively.
Carlos is considered ‘a go-to for any private client and trust related disputes’, with another industry source describing him as having ‘a wonderful bedside manner with clients’. In addition to his Band 1 ranking for the Cayman Islands, Carlos was also recognised in the ‘Expertise Based Abroad’ section of the British Virgin Islands rankings.
Vanessa is ‘very knowledgeable and on her A-game in terms of client service at all times’ and ‘one of Bermuda’s leading go-to lawyers with a wealth of knowledge, experience and a wonderful ability to explain and deliver’. Bermuda colleague Counsel Caljonah Smith (Up and Coming) is described as a ‘rising force within the firm’ as well as someone with ‘excellent service levels’.
In the Cayman Islands, Esmond Brown (Up and Coming) is recognised for his ‘calm, sensible and measured approach’ with the same source starting they ‘always breathe a sigh of relief when I see his name in a memo’.
In Guernsey, Paula Fry (Band 3) is noted for going ‘above and beyond to address unique issues and provide a plan of action’, while Erin Trimble-Cregeen (Up and Coming) from the Group’s Isle of Man office is regarded as a ‘highly skilled lawyer who is passionate about her work and has the ability to gain the trust of her clients and provide creative solutions’.
For Jersey, Fraser Robertson (Band 3) is described as a ‘a strong litigator’, Giles Corbin (Band 3) is considered a ‘go-to partner for complex trust related matters’, while Nichola Brennan (Associates to Watch) is ‘very responsive and good at keeping in touch. She’s very down to earth and approachable’. Another industry commentator said her ‘technical knowledge is excellent and her drafting is second-to-none’.
