Acorn Woodshack helped in being zero-waste operation by Condor Ferries

Condor Ferries is helping Acorn Woodshack in being a zero-waste operation.

Through its Community Fund, Condor has purchased a specialist dust extractor for the social enterprise, which uses only 100% waste timber. Not only does it create unique and bespoke wooden furniture, wildlife boxes and gifts, it also sells timber and kindling.

Not surprisingly, the workshop generates a lot of dust and sawdust and, instead of being thrown away, that is now compressed to make briquettes, which Acorn sells as winter fuel. The briquettes help sustain the charity, minimise waste and conserve a natural resource.

Caroline Spencer, Fundraising and Relationships Manager at Acorn, was very pleased with the new arrival. “The Woodshack supports people who have a disability or long-term health condition by providing work, training and development opportunities.

“Our team in the workshop really needed this dust extractor. It makes the work environment safer for team members and helps maintain our responsible approach to production and reuse. We are very grateful to Condor for their contribution.”

Greg Yeoman, Condor’s Commercial Director, commented: “We are very impressed by the innovative work that the Woodshack undertakes for the overall sustainable benefit of the Island and we are very happy we are able to demonstrate our support in this way.”
