Mind Jersey release video campaign

Mind Jersey has released a series of videos to raise awareness about some important mental health issues in the lead up to World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October.

They have been produced in partnership with creative studio, The Observatory, and emphasis the importance of supporting better mental health on the Island.

Jamie Paull and Kevan Nelson join Mind Jersey’s Executive Director, James Le Feuvre, in the videos that encourage more people to talk openly about mental health no matter their age, background or personal circumstances. The campaign also promotes the importance of addressing mental health concerns both personally and through the workplace.

Jamie Paull recently completed a 48-mile kayak round the Island which raised £1,400 for the charity and promoted the benefits exercise can have on your mental health. Jamie continues to raise awareness through his campaign video, where he draws upon the preparation for his challenge and the reasons why he chose to put himself in the spotlight to discuss mental health.

Kevan Nelson, Director at ROK Construction, discusses the stigma associated with mental health, particularly in a male-dominated industry such as construction. His organisation has worked closely with Mind Jersey to explore ways in which simple, but effective safety guidelines and policies – in relation to mental health issues in the workplace – can be introduced.

James Le Feuvre said: “We are incredibly thankful to Jamie, Kevan and the team at The Observatory for all the time and effort they have invested in supporting this campaign.  Jersey features strongly in these videos as we feel it is a truly special place to live. With a strong community, I believe we have the potential to create a supportive environment for those experiencing difficulty.”

“It is telling that we chose to feature three men, as often they can find it hard to open up about their own mental health. We hope that these videos will play a part in letting people know that they are not alone and that support is out there.”

Ben Hickingbotham, The Observatory’s Creative Director said: “It’s always a privilege for us to work with Mind Jersey and individuals who are passionate about making a difference in their communities. From the story of Jamie’s courage and determination in taking on an epic challenge, to Kevan’s commitment to put mental health and safety on the agenda within construction, we hope these films go on to raise awareness and encourage more individuals and businesses to become involved with such an important cause.”

All three videos are available on Mind Jersey’s website and will be shared across their social media platforms over the coming week. The local charity is encouraging islanders to watch the videos and share them to raise awareness and show their support, as nearly all of us have been touched by mental health in some way.

This year World Mental Health Day is focusing on suicide prevention and Mind Jersey is hosting a talk on the subject at The Jersey Art’s Centre on Wednesday 16 October. The evening is ticketed but free, and will feature talks from Dr Miguel Garcia, Father Conor Stainton-Polland and Natalie Claire who was bereaved by suicide.
