Success of Guernsey Polio campaign to be celebrated

September 22, 2019
in Guernsey News

Vaccinators set up booths at all train and bus stations to check that children travelling have received their polio drops during the National Imunisation Day. Polio mostly affects children under 5. In Saharanpur over 110,000 children were vaccinated by the end of the week and over 175 million children throughout India.

To celebrate the 60th year of Guernsey being Polio free, Rotary in Guernsey and offshore law firm Appleby, sponsors of Rotary’s Purple4Polio campaign in the Bailiwick, are hosting a reception at Princess Royal Centre for Performing Arts on Tuesday 1 October.

His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor and Lady Corder, who have been keen supporters of Rotary’s Polio campaign since they arrived on the island, very much hope to be present for the evening.

Drinks and canapes will be served from 6pm. The conversations, interspersed with clips from the funny, thought provoking and moving film Breathe, will begin in the Auditorium at 6.45pm.

The keynote speaker is David Leeks. David is a Polio survivor, former Chairman and Trustee of the British Polio Fellowship and ex-mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council. Other speakers include Guernsey’s Director of Public Health Nicola Brink, local Polio survivor Richard de la Rue, Appleby Partner Alison MacKrill and Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland Polio Champion Jannine Birtwistle.

It is a free event and those wishing to attend can register on Eventbrite.
