Seven students recently started Deloitte’s Summer Vacation Scheme which offers an insight into a career at a professional services firm in Jersey.
The scheme is a three to six-week summertime placement for undergraduates and those going on to do a masters degree at university.
Over the summer, seven successful applicants will tackle various projects, solving complex client problems and gaining valuable work experience.
The scheme began on 22 July with an initial introduction and team building week, which included internal training and a two-day bookkeeping course.
The undergraduates will spend the remaining weeks on the job in audit, tax and business advisory roles, getting a taste of what a career at Deloitte could involve.
At the end of the scheme, each of the students will present their experience to the wider office.
“We encourage students to join us in our summer vacation scheme. This is a great opportunity for them to understand what life is like at Deloitte. The experience is definitely worthwhile,” says Ana Mae Once, Deloitte manager spearheading this year’s scheme.
Ana is curating the activities included in the six-week programme and coordinating which jobs the students will be assigned to.
Student Pierre Sangan, age 19, expressed his appreciation for the scheme. He said: “The Summer Vacation Scheme at Deloitte is a fantastic introduction into the life of an accountant. After the training we have received, I feel that I can make a positive contribution to the office, while continually learning new skills which will help me considerably in the future.
“The whole team at Deloitte has made all of the students feel so welcome and are always happy to answer any questions or explain processes to us, making learning much easier and more enjoyable. I couldn’t recommend this scheme highly enough for anyone, whether they have prior experience in accountancy or not!”
“We are delighted with the number of people who have expressed interest and joined our summer vacation scheme programme for 2019,” says Deloitte partner Siobhan Durcan.
“They have very much immersed themselves in our business and our clients with a sense of enthusiasm and fun. They have also been actively involved in the work we do to support our charity partners. We hope to see many of them joining us as part of our graduate schemes once they finish university.”
