Jonathan has been appointed as a consultant and will work in close cooperation with the Martel Maides Auctions team.

Born and educated in Jersey, Jonathan joined the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) as a curator in 1983 after graduating in History of Art. He became a senior curator at the V&A and for eight years was head of one of its branch museums, Apsley House, The Wellington Museum on London’s Hyde Park Corner.

In 1997, Jonathan returned to Jersey and founded Atelier Ltd with his wife Colette, who is also an arts graduate. Their Jersey company deals primarily in oil paintings from the 17th toearly 20thcentury,watercolours, drawings and etchings and also provides professional valuations for insurance and probate. In 2005 Jonathan was elected a member of the British Antique Dealers’ Association (BADA) and he has published and lectured widely on a variety of subjects.

“It’s a genuine privilege to have someone as experienced as Jonathan on the team,” said Nick Renny, Director and Auctioneer at Martel Maides Auctions.

“His extensive knowledge of fine art is a huge asset and will contribute significantly to his role with us. He will also be focusing on sourcing a wide range of antiques, jewellery and collectibles in Jersey for sale at auction”.

James Bridges, Managing Director of Martel Maides Auctions, said: “We have been helping Jersey clients for several years, but with Jonathan’s appointment we will be able to significantly grow this relationship with the island and help more Jersey clients reach a global audience through our auctions in Guernsey.”

In 2018, Martel Maides Auctions achieved sales of over £2 million, with bidders from more than fifty countries worldwide.  “I’m delighted to be working with Martel Maides Auctions and their friendly and professional team,” said Jonathan.

“I am often asked to advise on high-value works of art and antiques here in Jersey. Through working closely with Martel Maides Auctions we can now offer a simple solution that will help sellers in Jersey to reach an international audience and achieve the true market value. I am really impressed by the range of expertise within Martel Maides Auctions and am confident that objects are very carefully researched before being offered. I am excited by this opportunity and look forward to meeting clients who have interesting items they are considering bringing to auction.”
