Leaders, a Guernsey-based consultancy focused on creating leadership excellence across the Channel Islands, is hosting its second leadership conference at St Pierre Park Hotel on Thursday 20 June.

The line-up of speakers will present a diverse range of topics focusing on the theme of ‘horizon thinking’, with the aim of shining a spotlight on leadership excellence and stimulating conversations around topical issues facing Channel Islands leaders.

Curated by Leaders’ founder Phil Eyre, the speakers include Major General Paul Nanson who is the Commandant of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and renowned the world over for excellence in leadership development.

He was recently appointed as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the newly formed Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command and has held many distinguished roles within the army including Colonel of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and Chairman of the Sandhurst Trust.

Major General Nanson says: ‘I hope to bring each leadership story to life with examples from my own experience and with vignettes from military history.  The purpose is to suggest lessons that might be applicable in a civilian context.’

Lord Bilimoria of Chelsea CBE, DL, Chairman and Founder of Cobra Beer, Independent Crossbench Peer in the House of Lords, will ask the audience – what does courageous leadership require?

Lord Bilimoria believes that courage is at the heart of effective leadership and will draw on his extensive experience as a businessman, entrepreneur and peer in the House of Lords to challenge the audience’s conventional thinking.

Also speaking at the conference is Dr Ellen Moon, Lecturer in Environmental Engineering. During her childhood in Jersey, she aspired to make a positive difference to the world, and her career in science is enabling her to do just that.

Dr Moon is a proud advocate for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and strives to make science and engineering more accessible to young women.

Dr Moon says: ‘Diversity of thought and multidisciplinary learning is becoming increasingly important; it’s too easy for all of us to become immersed in our own “bubbles”. I’m excited that the conference includes a wide variety of speakers and guests; I’m looking forward not only to sharing my experiences but also learning from others.’

Finally, entrepreneurial couple Dame Mary and Douglas Perkins will be interviewed by Phil Eyre. The couple established Specsavers’ joint venture partnership model in 1984, with the vision of making eye care more affordable.

Mr Eyre says: ‘ I’m looking forward to exploring with Dame Mary and Douglas how their personal values have shaped their long-term vision and enabled them to navigate their business and personal challenges.

‘Leaders’ inaugural conference in 2017 was very well received by the business community who enjoyed the different perspectives our guest speakers shared on their leadership experiences.

‘This year we are equally excited about the line-up of speakers, who will draw upon their diverse experiences to challenge our leadership thinking and stimulate discussions around the theme of “horizon thinking”.’

The conference has been sponsored by Grant Thornton, Northern Trust, Carey, Specsavers, Active Optimus and Investec (Channel Islands).

Starting at 4pm and concluding after dinner, the conference schedule includes time in between each presenter for a round-table discussion.

The evening’s programme will conclude with the opportunity to enjoy refreshments and network on the terrace, prior to a barbecue which all speakers and delegates are invited to attend.
