A team of Guernsey firefighters will be taking on this year’s Saffery Rotary Walk in full firefighting kit.
The team will share a breathing apparatus set throughout the challenge as they tackle the island’s iconic coastal route on Saturday 6 June.
Firefighters Matt, Craig and Russell have signed up to complete the Walk wearing full firefighting kit, rotating responsibility for carrying the breathing apparatus set across different stages of the route.
The team has already begun preparing for the demanding challenge, including stair training sessions inside Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service’s station tower during lunch breaks as they build fitness and endurance ahead of the event.
Walking the Saffery Rotary Walk is a challenge in itself, but completing the route in full firefighting kit while carrying breathing apparatus equipment adds an extra level of difficulty both physically and mentally.
Matt said: “It definitely seemed like a good idea when we first discussed it, but that opinion may change over the course of the Walk. Training has already shown us what a challenge it is going to be.”
He added: “The support and reactions we’ve had so far have been brilliant. We wanted to do something different while supporting such an important community event and the local charities involved.”
