Ask the Business Coach: What’s the number one people metric for employee satisfaction?

Channel Eye has joined forces with Royston Guest, leading Business Growth Coach and CEO/Founder of Pathways Global, in our series, ‘Ask the Business Coach’.

Most leaders point to engagement scores, retention data, or even salary benchmarks. And while those matter, they’re not the real driver. Employee satisfaction isn’t created by perks or policies – it’s driven by something far more fundamental. Miss it, and you’ll always be reacting instead of leading.

Three key takeaways

  • Measure what actually matters.
  • Insight comes from the conversation, not the score.
  • The Proud Factor.

Episode timestamps

  • [1.08] If you want a single, powerful metric that cuts through the noise – this is it. Ask your people: “On a scale of 1–10, how proud are you to work for this organisation?” That number will tell you more than pages of survey data ever could. Pride isn’t surface-level. It reflects how your people truly feel – about the culture, the leadership, the direction, and their place within it.
  • [2.11] Use it as a simple, consistent pulse check to understand where you really stand – not where you think you stand.
  • [2.38] Go deeper with “What makes you give that score?” and “What would need to happen to make it a 10?” That’s where the real insight lies. When people feel proud, they don’t just stay. They perform.
