Guernsey’s fibre broadband rollout is almost complete, with 98% of homes and businesses now able to connect to faster, more reliable fibre.
With the evolution in the island’s connectivity in its final phase, the old copper network is being switched off, meaning anyone still on copper must move to fibre to keep their broadband, landline and lifeline services working.
Already, 79% of broadband customers (21,330 connections) have made the switch. But there is no automatic transfer, and copper switch off has already begun – so islanders still using copper need to act now. Friends and family members are encouraged to check in with older or more vulnerable islanders to make sure they don’t get left behind.
This island wide upgrade is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever delivered in Guernsey, already bringing faster, more-resilient broadband, improved support for essential services and stronger connectivity for homes, businesses and the community.
Sure Group CEO Alistair Beak celebrated the progress so far and outlined what islanders need to do next: “We’re now in the final stage of Guernsey’s fibre rollout, bringing worldclass connectivity to our island. Almost every home and business can get fibre, and most already have. The priority now is helping the remaining customers still on copper to switch without delay. Across the rest of the year we’re going to be getting the clear messaging out there that the switchoff has started – the time to act is now.”
President of the States of Guernsey’s Committee for Economic Development, Deputy Sasha Kazantseva-Miller, said: “Guernsey has taken a huge leap forwards the last few years with the ongoing rollout of fibre broadband. We are almost at a place now where every islander has access to super-fast internet speeds, and it won’t be long before Guernsey can enjoy universal access to this world-class digital connectivity.
“We are already seeing it open doors for our economy by enabling greater productivity and innovation within the island, and we look forward to seeing this trend continue as the technology evolves further.”
