This year marks the 70th anniversary of apprenticeship provision in the Bailiwick, with the first Apprenticeship Scheme having been approved by the States on 14 December 1949.
The Guernsey College of Further Education is inviting anyone who has completed an apprenticeship to join in with the 70th anniversary celebrations.
Over the last 70 years, the Apprenticeship Scheme has grown and adapted to meet industry need. Apprenticeships are available in over 15 different professional areas, including construction, engineering, hospitality and catering, hairdressing and horticulture. There are now more than 500 registered employers with an average of 70 enrolments each year.
In order to mark the significant contribution apprentices and the Apprenticeship Scheme have made to our community, a year of celebration is planned. There are a number of events taking place throughout the year including a celebratory event and an exhibition. The College is looking for 70 people, who started their careers as an apprentice in the Bailiwick, to represent their alumni.
There will be thousands of islanders who have completed their apprenticeships locally and have gone on to have extremely successful careers, many now with their own businesses and apprentices. The College would like to invite those who have completed apprenticeships in the past to join the celebrations.
Louise Misselke, Principal of the Guernsey College of Further Education, said:
“Throughout the year we would like to celebrate the accomplishments of all past apprentices and I would, therefore, like to encourage them to contact theapprenticeship team if they would like to be a part of the anniversary celebrations.”
