A Jersey-based textile artist has been formally recognised as the Channel Islands’ approved teddy bear restorer by an international professional group.
Christine, who runs Bear Repair Jersey, was recently accepted by the Teddy Bear Restoration Group, a network of experienced restorers that promotes best practice in the repair of antique and collectible bears and directs owners to approved specialists in their region.
Her route into bear restoration began around five years ago while working as an art therapist at EYECAN, after a colleague asked whether she could help restore a much-loved teddy. The successful repair led to further commissions and the gradual development of specialist skills.

Drawing on training as an embroiderer and a long career as a textile artist, Christine expanded her knowledge of historic teddy bear makes and materials, collecting examples to better understand how they were constructed. She also documented her work online, which helped build interest among collectors.
Alongside restoration work, Christine designs and creates new handmade teddy bears, which are stocked by The Harbour Gallery in Jersey, ranging from miniature keepsakes to larger collectible pieces. She is also known for her wider textile practice, producing textile jewellery and redesigned pieces incorporating semi precious stones.

Earlier in her career she undertook hand stitching work for fashion designer David Gainsborough Roberts, creating detailed designs for jackets, including portraits such as Marilyn Monroe.
Her growing reputation brought her to the attention of the Teddy Bear Restoration Group, which was formed by professional restorers concerned about poorly executed or damaging repair work. The approval process involves close scrutiny of techniques, materials and completed restorations.
Christine said: “Approval means that I will be recommended to anyone asking for help finding a restorer in the Channel Isles and that my work is acknowledged to be of the standard required by museums, collectors and dealers.”
