Excitement from the world of Formula 1 is set to hit Jersey this December as students from across the island take part in the prestigious STEM Racing education event.
Over 70 students will attend the regional competition at Jersey College for Girls on Wednesday 10th December, competing in teams of 3-6 for a place on the STEM Racing UK podium and a spot at the National Finals 2026 in Sheffield, England.
Supported by Formula 1, the competition challenges students to design, build, and race miniature F1 cars while developing wider skills including project management, marketing, and sponsorship.
The STEM Racing competition is designed to be accessible to all students and encourages learning across Key Stages of the national curriculum. Competitors at the event will participate in one of three classes:
- Professional Class (KS4/5)
- Development Class (KS3/4)
- Entry Class (KS2)
In Jersey, the event is led by Digital Jersey, a Centre of Excellence and authorised co-ordinator of the challenge. Digital Jersey provides teachers and students with free access to STEM Racing manufacturing, analysis, and race equipment at its hub in St Helier, along with expert advice and mentoring.
Tom Milner, Project Director at STEM Racing UK, said: “This year marks the second STEM Racing event in Jersey following the launch of the challenge in the country in 2024, and we are delighted to see the competition going from strength to strength with more teams and schools joining us. Digital Jersey is a fantastic partner for STEM Racing UK and has done a brilliant job in teaching pupils about the principles of engineering.”
Tony Moretta, CEO, Digital Jersey, added: “Our first year of this programme last year was a real success, and I’m pleased that we will have even more secondary school students now taking part under the new STEM Racing umbrella. We’re also expanding the programme to primary schools for the first time, giving younger students the chance to explore the basics of engineering by designing their own mini F1 cars.
“The initiative, this year sponsored by local technology firm C5 Alliance, offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to develop vital STEM and business skills in a fun, engaging, and creative environment – and with the chance to represent the Island on a national and even global stage at stake, I’m sure the competition event will be incredibly exciting.”
