Free WiFi is now available on Guernsey buses.

The States of Guernsey has partnered with Sure to provide the free service on its new bus fleet.

Passengers will enjoy an easy-to-access and secure portal.  The WiFi has been in operation over the last few months on 12 vehicles on a trial basis and has seen over 2,300 unique users taking advantage.  The WiFi has now been rolled out to the remaining new buses.

After selecting the ‘Free Bus WiFi’ network on buses that display a Wi-Fi symbol, users will reach a landing page detailing the settings that are in place.  Passengers can browse the internet, check emails, access social networking and shop online.  However, to provide a reasonable speed of service and protection for users, there are some usage restrictions in place.

As well as being available on the buses, the free WiFi service is also available at the Bus Information Centre in Town.

Deputy Barry Brehaut, President of the Committee for theEnvironment and Infrastructure, said he was pleased that a further incentive to use the bus network had been introduced.

“Travelling by bus has never been more convenient for a whole host of reasons, and the increases we’ve seen consistently in recent years attests to that. Introducing a free WiFi service further increases that convenience for passengers, he said. ”

Jason Fitton from Sure is pleased to be involved with this project:

“Sure is pleased to provide this service to bus users in Guernsey and we hope that this is a further incentive to use the island’s bus network. At Sure we want to be involved in projects that benefit the community and providing WiFi on the island’s bus fleet does exactly that.”

The monthly cost of the service is £50 per vehicle, which is approximately 1.2p per passenger journey.  The service enhancement is being funded from the Integrated Transport Strategy.
