Channel Islands ministers meet to strengthen inter-island ties

Government ministers and officials from Jersey and Alderney came together on Friday for a series of positive discussions focused on enhancing inter-island connectivity, boosting tourism, and celebrating shared Channel Islands heritage.

Alderney’s Economic Development Committee Chair, Stuart Clark, and Committee Member Edward Hill were welcomed to Jersey by Deputy Kirsten Morel, Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, and Assistant Minister Deputy Malcolm Ferey. The visit included a range of engagements and meetings with local businesses.

This was a return visit following Deputy Morel’s two-day trip to Alderney in August 2024, which helped lay the groundwork for renewed collaboration between the islands.

The meeting builds on recent progress in inter-island relations, following the reintroduction of direct air and sea links between Jersey and Alderney. It also provided an opportunity to explore both islands’ unique and shared heritage.

Stuart Clark said: “We are delighted to have been hosted by our colleagues in the Government of Jersey and Ports of Jersey after collaborating to enhance both sea and air connections between our islands. Restoring regular services is vital for strengthening business ties and boosting tourism, while also supporting the many family connections that unite Jersey and Alderney. As we work to revitalise Alderney’s economy after years of stagnation, we regard improved links with Jersey as an essential step towards a more prosperous future.”

Deputy Morel said: “The new direct services from Finistair and Water Taxi CI have improved our air and sea connections this summer, and we are keen to maximise these links for residents, visitors, and businesses.

“Visits like this allow us to consider sustainable growth in travel and trade, while also making sure we celebrate the heritage we share as a Channel Islands community. I look forward to further discussions on this front in the coming months.”
