Governance lessons from Post Office Scandal to feature at IoD Guernsey 2025 Convention

The Institute of Directors Guernsey Branch has announced Professor Richard Moorhead as the latest speaker confirmed for its 2025 Annual Convention, taking place on Thursday 2nd October.

Professor Moorhead (pictured) is a former solicitor and a leading academic in the field of law and professional ethics. He is currently Professor of Law and Professional Ethics at the University of Exeter and also holds an Honorary Professorship at University College London.

His appearance at the Convention will explore the ethical failings that contributed to the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, a case widely regarded as one of the most significant governance failures in UK corporate and legal history. His talk, titled ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly of Corporate Governance – Lessons from  the Post Office Scandal’, will offer valuable insight into the ethical dimensions of leadership and accountability.

Professor Moorhead currently sits on the Horizon Compensation Advisory Board, advising the Department for Business and Trade on compensation schemes for victims of the scandal.

He is also a co-lead on a major ESRC-funded research project examining the ethical failings at the heart of the crisis. This work was recognised with the 2024 ESRC Prize for Outstanding Societal Impact.

With more than thirty years of experience researching legal services and advising governments, NGOs and regulators, Professor Moorhead’s current focus is on the ethical responsibilities of lawyers. For directors, his session will provide practical lessons on how organisational culture, legal accountability and professional ethics intersect, and what leaders can do to ensure stronger oversight, better decision-making, and more responsible governance frameworks.

Glen Tonks, Chair of the Institute of Directors (IoD) Guernsey Branch, said: “We look forward to welcoming Richard, who brings deep expertise and clarity to the often-overlooked ethical dimensions of governance. His work on the Post Office scandal adds to a growing body of evidence that ethics must be embedded, and not just  assumed, within organisations.”
