A cohort of 16 Jersey students have passed the IOD Jersey’s Work Shadowing Scheme 2018. Four students have also won awards in recognition of their excellent work.

Their achievements were celebrated at a reception held at Private & Public Space on Wednesday 21 November. Almost 100 IoD members, mentors, students and their families attended the event held at the St. Helier art gallery.

Certificates and awards were presented to the students who took part in this year’s scheme, which was sponsored by KPMG Channel Islands and undertaken in partnership with Skills Jersey.

Each year, the students’ CVs, application letters, interviews and reports of their work shadowing experience are assessed, with prizes being awarded to the students who impressed most and submitted the most compelling reports.

This year, the overall prize was awarded toOscar Le Seelleur from Victoria College, who shadowed Neil McCluskey from Barclays International. As well as receiving a trophy for being the overall winner and submitting the best report, he also received a cheque for £200.

In addition, Victoria College student Leo Waddington, who shadowed Chris Clark from Prosperity 24.7, was awarded for Best Report. Lily Pitcher from Beaulieu, who shadowed Simon Boas from Jersey Overseas Aid and Felix Carnegie from Victoria College, who shadowed Duncan Gibaut from the Chief Minister’s Department, were both Highly Commended.

Shelley Kendrick, Chair of the IoD Jersey Education and Training Sub-Committee, says:

“This is a great achievement for our students and credit must go to all our award winners this year. The standard was very high and it is rewarding to know that we have such a strong set of students graduating through our schools. They have gained invaluable experience across numerous industries in both the private and public sectors that I am sure will help them in their future studies and endeavours. I am extremely grateful to the organisations and their directors and senior managers who came forward to offer placements and mentoring. They dedicate valuable time to our students and make a real difference to this unique and valuable scheme.”

The IoD Jersey’s Work Shadow Scheme, supported by Skills Jersey and sponsored by KPMG Channel Islands, provides a means for all Year 12 students in the Island to experience a week shadowing a senior director in order to get a taste for a business career. The 2019 Scheme will get under way again in January, when presentations will be held for Sixth Forms at schools across Jersey.
