Intertrust donates new reading books for Jersey primary schools

Intertrust has donated new reading books to local charity, Every Child Our Future.

The books which will be distributed across local primary schools, feature popular favourites such as Roald Dahl, Terry Pratchett, Julia Donaldson and Dr Seuss.

The charity aims to enable 95% of local children to reach their age-related standards in literacy and numeracy at Key Stage 2. They provide support for 500 children on the island.

Intertrust has also provided funding to go towards supporting the charity’s Reading Recovery programme. Every Child Our Future provides specialised support in the structured Reading Recovery programme, which benefits the lowest literacy achievers in Key Stage 1. Each child receives one-to-one teaching for 30 minutes a day for 12-to-20 weeks, depending on their rate of progress.

Nick Kershaw, director at Every Child our Future, said: “We’re so grateful for Intertrust’s support. Part of the key to improving literacy is getting children to enjoy picking up and reading a book and I have no doubt that the children will be inspired to do just that when they see the wonderful books that Intertrust have generously donated.

“The impact of improving children’s reading is far wider than just reading levels; feedback from teachers and parents say that these children are much more engaged in class and have really grown in confidence.”

Helene Senior, head of corporate social responsibility at Intertrust, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support this charity in their great work helping children reach their recommended reading level. We wanted to support this charity as it falls within our youth and education promise to children and the local community. The CSR team really enjoyed the shopping experience in buying the books and we hope the children enjoy reading them over thecoming months.”
