Channel Eye has joined forces with Royston Guest, leading Business Growth Coach and CEO/Founder of Pathways Global, in our column, ‘Ask the Business Coach’.

Choosing the right employees will propel your business forward; hiring unsuitable individuals can hinder your growth journey by 6 to 12 months. Achieving complete clarity on the role you are hiring for and the type of person needed to fulfil that role is crucial when seeking to recruit a new employee.

Business Growth Pathways logoThree key takeaways

  1. 49% Task, 51% Feeling Hiring Rule.
  2. Cultural fit is everything.
  3. What is their motivation – why do they want the role

Episode timestamps

  • [1.14] Having the technical skills or qualifications to perform a role is a given. A candidate shouldn’t even be considered if they don’t meet these fundamental criteria.
  • [1.27] Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group, had a hiring rule based on 49% tasks, i.e. how an individual performs their duties and 51% feelings, i.e. how an individual relates to themselves and others on an emotional and personal level.
    • When recruiting, consider the high effectiveness quotient of candidates, namely their emotional skills. You may have the most qualified individual, but if they are not a team player, do not culturally align with your organisation, or lack the correct set of values, their technical qualifications become irrelevant; they simply will not fit.
  • [2.53] Cultural fit is everything. Will this candidate fit culturally with our team, culture, and organisation?
    • Ask why they wish to work for you; what motivates them? What’s their story? Are they seeking merely a job, a career, or a chance to make a difference? Delve into their reasons for wanting to join your team.
