Prospective lawyers who want to take the first steps in their legal careers are being invited to apply to Bedell Cristin’s student schemes in Jersey.
The firm runs a Trainee Solicitor scheme (via the SQE route for qualification as a Solicitor for England and Wales) and a Bursary scheme for Islanders seeking to embark on a career in law.
The two-year, full-time Trainee Solicitor scheme involves rotations around legal practice areas, working with partners and fee-earners on legal matters on the path to formal legal qualification, while the scholarship and bursary schemes for students undergoing studies offer paid work experience, career advice and financial support.
The three offices include qualified lawyers who have graduated through the schemes across all practice groups, and Head of Corporate Guy Westmacott who leads the training schemes in the Channel Islands said that the bursary and trainee students made a tangible contribution to the business.
“We welcome the opportunity to bring people into our global business right at the outset of their legal careers – we benefit from their energy and the ideas that they bring, and they benefit from our approach which exposes them to quality legal work and interactions with clients from a very early stage,” he said.
“The lawyers within our business who have graduated through the schemes are having a genuine impact on our practice areas, and we look forward to welcoming a fresh cohort across our offices into our trainee and bursary schemes in 2025.”
Current and former participants in Bedell Cristin’s Jersey student schemes include Trainee Solicitors Eleanor Clarke (main picture) and Olivia Shaxson, and Associates Catarina Basilio, Thomas Dawson, Ema Francisco, David Lobato Taylor and Victoria Ramos.
Eleanor, a graduate of Oxford University, is developing her legal expertise across practice areas after joining the trainee scheme. Olivia progressed from the firm’s bursary programme to the Trainee Solicitor scheme in 2024, building on her experience across all teams.
Thomas, Ema and Victoria joined Bedell Cristin’s bursary scheme before progressing onto the firms Trainee Solicitor scheme to qualify as England and Wales Solicitors.
David and Catarina, now Associates, both qualified as England and Wales Solicitors earlier this year following the completion of their training contracts with Bedell Cristin.
