The School of Popular Music was asked by the Parish of St Helier to provide the musical entertainment to kick-off this year’s highly anticipated Christmas Lights Switch-On event at West Centre, St Helier.

The event started at West Centre, where seven enthusiastic School of Popular Music (SOPM) students, including a heart-warming appearance by the Minis group (composed of children aged 4–7), performed Christmas carols.

The Minis, that the school has nurtured since May, diligently practiced Christmas carols for several weeks leading up to the event, ensuring they delivered a delightful performance for this family event.

Connor Burgher, St Helier town centre manager said: “The Christmas Lights Switch-On is one of the most anticipated events of the season and having had the talented students from the School of Popular Music perform provided a special start to the event. Their enthusiasm truly set the festive spirit in motion for our community. We’re grateful to SOPM for being a part of this event and making it memorable for everyone in St Helier.”

Phoebe Willson, co-leader of SOPM alongside her fiancée Harrison Collins, expressed her excitement for the students: “It’s really special to be a part of community events like this. Plus, any opportunity for students to perform is great, as it gets them out of the classroom and teaches them how to handle nerves in the real world.”
