Supported by the Jersey Community Foundation, the Live Well Jersey Programme Offers islanders a new approach to managing and reversing chronic conditions.
Lifestyle Medicine Jersey, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering Islanders to take control of their health, is launching the Live Well programme, a series of 12-week, group-based courses designed to help people manage and reverse metabolic syndrome through sustainable, evidence-based lifestyle changes. Funded by the Jersey Community Foundation, this initiative aims to make lasting improvements in community health by supporting Islanders with practical tools for healthier living.
What is Metabolic Syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome, a group of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, affects many Islanders but often goes unnoticed. It is estimated that around 20-30% of adults in Jersey will have this condition. Through the Live Well programme, participants can take control of their health now and prevent costly, life-threatening complications in the future.
With lifestyle adjustments such as better nutrition, increased physical activity, and stress management, the Live Well programme aims to help participants dramatically improve their health outcomes – potentially achieving better management or even reversal of their conditions.
“The Live Well courses are all about prevention and empowerment,” said Dr Jo Darwood, Lifestyle Medicine Doctor/Director at Lifestyle Medicine Jersey. “By addressing the root causes of metabolic syndrome, we are giving people the tools and support they need to live healthier, longer lives, and reduce their dependence on medications.”
Call to action for registrations
The Live Well courses, which begin in January 2025, are now open for registration. These group sessions are designed specifically for individuals diagnosed or at risk of metabolic syndrome – with at least two metabolic health conditions including being overweight, having high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, or pre-diabetes.
Led by local certified lifestyle medicine professionals, Dr Jo Darwood (local GP), and Lauren Perchard-Rees (pictured) (Healthcare Professional) who have over 40 years of combined experience in health care and are passionate about supporting people to achieve better health whilst creating a community for ongoing support.
Courses will be held at various locations and times over a 12-week period, with core 60-90 minute sessions on alternate weeks, covering topics such as nutrition, movement, stress management, sleep, and social connections. Optional practical sessions will offer participants hands-on experience with activities discussed in the educational sessions.
A recent participant, Ronni from St. Martin’s, who joined the pilot programme earlier this year for people living with pre-diabetes, shared: “I’m so happy with my results, so enthusiastic about this way of living, and grateful to have had the opportunity to attend.”
