43 local sixth form students explored Guernsey’s international insurance sector at the Guernsey International Insurance Association’s second Insuring the Future event on 3rd October.

The half-day conference introduced students to Guernsey’s role in managing global risks and providing insurance solutions for multinational companies.

Students from the Sixth Form Centre, the Guernsey Institute, Ladies’ College, Blanchelande College, and Elizabeth College formed teams to tackle a case study simulating real-world challenges in insurance. Tasked with creating a bespoke captive insurance solution for a large global shipping client, students got a taste of how insurance professionals help companies mitigate risks and manage costs amidst industry pressures, such as environmental and regulatory changes.

Working through the intricacies of the case study, students were guided by industry professionals from local insurance firms, and then had to present their proposal to a panel of judges. The winning team impressed judges with their proposal, with students from Blanchelande College, Elizabeth College, Ladies’ College, and the Guernsey Institute.

Returning keynote speaker, Deputy Mark Helyar, spoke about his varied career path and how he ended up working in insurance. He focused on the ethical side of the industry, highlighting how it is a draw for the next generation to be in a sector that helps address global challenges.

Vidya Amey, Head of Futures at Elizabeth College, said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed this practical workshop, leaving with new knowledge and a drive to explore Captive Insurance and opportunities in Guernsey’s financial services. We are grateful for events that broaden their horizons and reveal the many opportunities available to them.”

Adele Gale, Chair of GIIA, commented: “There’s a growing demand for Guernsey insurance managers to handle increasingly diverse and complex insurance structures. It’s crucial for us to invest in training and recruiting the next generation to continue driving these entities forward. Events like this give young people a valuable glimpse into the future of Guernsey insurance and how they could play a role in supporting global economies.

“Thank you to all the characters, facilitators and judges for their support a second year running. This event wouldn’t have been possible without their knowledge and insight, and I’m so pleased we could build on the success of last year.”
