The team at Jersey Zoo have been busy re-purposing some unusual Christmas leftovers donated by Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa.
The gelada baboons, golden Guernsey goats and a whole flock of different bird species have been making the most of around 25 of the Christmas trees which were part of the stunning Winter Domes installation over the festive season.
The evergreen trees have been given a new lease of life providing the perfect back scratchers and exciting hidey holes for playtime.
Commenting on the post-Christmas gifts, Georgia Gotts, Deputy Curator of Mammals, Jersey Zoo said: “We are so grateful to Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa for giving their Christmas trees to us for the animals here at Jersey Zoo.
“These trees aren’t something the animals receive all year round, so they provide a lot of fun and enrichment for them, as well as great nesting materials for some of our birds. Our gelada baboons and golden Guernsey goats will love them as they’re perfect enrichment tools due to their unusual scent and texture, and they’ll have a lot of fun climbing on them too!”
Tim O’Sullivan, General Manager Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa added: “We’re delighted to be able to re-gift the beautiful trees that we have enjoyed over the last month to Jersey Zoo. It’s now the animals’ turn to enjoy them and will provide them with something extra to keep them stimulated. It’s really good to know that they won’t be going to waste!”
Once the animals have enjoyed the trees, the keepers will collect them and use them for compost in the Zoo’s organic farm to help grow produce for the animals to eat.
Please note: Jersey Zoo do not wish for any more trees to be donated so the general public should not drop any trees to the site.
