A concert of Remembrance: War poetry and song
Children in Guernsey will soon benefit from a special remembrance concert raising funds for musical education, with a little help from Aurigny.
All proceeds from the In Remembrance concert will go towards supporting and promoting a love for music among young people in the island. The event is being hosted by the Guernsey charity Huanui Music at the Town Church on 24 November and will be attended by His Excellency Lieutenant-Governor General Richard Cripwell.
Aurigny is sponsoring flights for gifted UK-based cellist Maddy Hamilton to perform at the special event. Maddy has experience performing and recording with artists such as Robbie Williams, Michael Buble and Lewis Capaldi, and has appeared on Strictly Come Dancing and the Graham Norton Show. For her performance in Guernsey, Maddy will play an antique cello from around 1830, constructed by renowned string instrument maker Joseph Charotte-Millot. She will be accompanied by local pianist Stephen Le Prevost and baritone Joseph Edwards, who has performed multiple times for the Royal Family.
The event will feature a premiere of Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s rendition of the Ukraine war poem ‘Resistance’ by England’s Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and other war poetry and musical performances.
Huanui Music co-founder Jonathan Bates said: “We are very grateful to Aurigny for sponsoring flights to Guernsey for one of our talented musicians. It not only gives Maddy the opportunity to showcase her talent at a concert amongst our community but also allows Huanui Music to support local musicians through proceeds raised at the event.”
