Summer flag football tournament will benefit Headway charity

Trust Corporation International and the Guernsey American Flag Football Association have teamed up for a charity American Flag Football tournament on 11 August in aid of Headway Guernsey.

The American Flag Football league has seen steady growth over the five years since it began, assisted by the continued sponsorship of Trust Corporation International. Now both organisations have come together to stage a charity tournament at the Hockey Club to promote awareness of the sport and raise money for Headway Guernsey.

The tournament is for men and women over the age of 16 with any athletic ability and the organisers are looking for groups of colleagues, friends or families to sign up. If the player has never taken part or even heard of flag football, the association is offering additional coaching sessions as well as open ‘crash courses’ to introduce the sport to novices.

As well as a day of friendly sporting competition, the tournament will have a bouncy castle and other activities for children to ensure that all the family can enjoy the event.

All proceeds from the tournament will go to Headway Guernsey, a local charity that supports islanders and their families who live with the long-term effects of a brain injury. The organisation provides a range of services that bring people together in a safe and supportive environment to prevent the isolation a serious injury can cause.

Guernsey Flag American Football committee member, Rob Domaille, said: “The tournament is open to anyone and everyone that wants to enter a team and we’re especially encouraging companies to sign up as it’s a great team-building experience,  trying a new sport and having fun together at the same time. The great British summer can be short and sweet so why not enjoy the weather while we can?The committee members and I are always happy to talk about flag football and would like to encourage anyone to get in touch with any questions they might have.”

Ken Wrigley, Headway Director, added: “Headway Guernsey is delighted to be the nominated charity for the inaugural American Flag Football Tournament.  A healthy lifestyle is beneficial to all and it is wonderful to see a new sport gathering strength in Guernsey and receiving support from the local business community.”
