Jerseyman David Tupper is preparing to conquer the highest peak in Greece to help raise money for Jersey Cheshire Home.
David is part of a group of intrepid trekkers setting off on a five-day trek in September who will be summiting 2,917m up Mount Olympus in the mystical home of the ancient Greek Gods.
A long-term supporter of the Home, David who has previously volunteered there, has been on many of their treks over the years and has helped to raise tens of thousands of pounds.
David said: “I got to meet many residents and care workers whilst volunteering and realised that this Home is really needed in Jersey.
“Despite my ‘never again’ mantra I think I have done all the treks since the first one back in 2009 to Machu Picchu in Peru. I’ve trekked to The Balkans, Patagonia, Jordan, Kerala, Iceland and Slovenia.
“My friend and fellow trekker David Le Cornu like to think we started the trekking fundraising idea by completing a very wet and windy ‘West Highland Way’ walk and climbing Ben Nevis. From memory we raised about £10,000 towards a special bath for the home.
“I enjoy the challenge and it’s a chance to visit some very interesting places I wouldn’t normally get to visit.”
This year is a special year for the Home which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The team have organised some epic challenges and hope to raise £400,000 towards their mission of enhancing lives and supporting islanders with disabilities.
Donna Abel, CEO Jersey Cheshire Home said: “We’re delighted David is trekking for us again this year and raising money for those who can’t. He’s an amazing supporter of Jersey Cheshire Home and proof that you’re never too old to challenge yourself.
“We are all looking forward to the Mont Olympus Trek and anyone wishing to support can donate here. Unfortunately registration for the September trek is now closed but if you are inspired by David and would like to experience what it is like to trek in true jungle conditions and then climbing over 4,000 metres to summit South-East Asia’s highest peak, then Trek Borneo 2024 is for you.”
