ArtHouse Jersey has announced some of the successful artists to apply for the latest round of their Development Grants, a quarterly funding initiative, which offers financial assistance to support the creation of new work or for the development of an artist’s creative process.
The funding committee awarded grants to eight applicants for a variety of exciting projects and development opportunities including short films, a fashion course, musical EP, photography project, theatre piece and music video.
The next deadline for applications is 1st August 2023. Those interested in applying should read the guidelines on the ArtHouse Jersey website and complete an application form.
Some of the successful applicants in the latest round of funding include:
Harry Green: ‘The Nun Slayer’ post-production
Harry Green and his team at Shorthand Films are young filmmakers breaking into the industry. They are aiming to build their profile through the creation of unique, thought provoking films with a comedic edge. Green was awarded funding for the post-production stage of ‘The Nun Slayer’ which is a love story that explores themes of the self, toxic masculinity, fame and dysfunctional relationships through the lens of Hybristophelia, the phenomenon of finding romance in the criminal acts of others.
Harry explained: “Myself and the team at Shorthand Films are delighted to have secured funding from ArtHouse Jersey to begin post-production on our dark comedy-drama short film The Nun Slayer.
“This support means we can assemble a talented group of artists to finesse the edit and who will give the project the skill and care the film deserves in the colour grade, sound mix and composition of the score. After a fantastic shoot with a stellar cast and crew at the end of May it will be wonderful to watch it all come to life. Funding short films is no easy task, and so myself and the team are extremely grateful to ArtHouse Jersey for this award that will allow us to get this great little short over the line and onto a screen near you soon!”
Anaya Kogi: Fashion design course in Florence
Anaya Kogi is an A-level student studying textiles at Jersey College for Girls. Her ambition is to work in the fashion industry and she is passionate about creativity and innovation. Kogi has been awarded funding as a contribution to undertake a fashion design course in Florence, Italy over the summer before starting University later this year. She hopes to bring back a holiday or Saturday school to the Island to introduce young minds to a minority industry in Jersey.
Megan Langlois: EP
Megan Langlois is a singer/songwriter who recently performed at Glastonbury festival. She has been awarded funding to launch her first EP and have a set of original songs professionally recorded.
She sais: “I am extremely grateful to ArtHouse Jersey for providing the funding and giving me an opportunity to push my work to the next level. I will be using the funding to professionally record some of my songs for an EP and launch event. I look forward to collaborating with ArtHouse Jersey going forward.”
Connor Daly: Visions Of The Country, photography project
Connor Daly is a photographer whose work explores compositional effects that provoke spatial ambiguity, utilising a painterly and abstract style. Daly was awarded funding for the project ‘Visions Of The Country’ which aims to produce a broad series of landscape and environmental photographs depicting various historically significant sites around the UK, exploring how these places are defined by the intersection of memory, and haunted by their past. He will be working across the UK, photographing various historical sites in areas such as Kent, Essex, Suffolk, London and East Sussex, producing a broad spectrum of images consisting of architecture, landscape and seascape.
Gemma Daubeney: Pleading Stupidity – Edinburgh Fringe Run
Gemma Daubeney is a performer and creative with ‘Maybe You Like It’ theatre company. The company was formed at Oxford University in 2019 and has since developed into a close-knit team of emerging artists. They make comedic, fast, and fluid stage shows, audio shows, sketches and podcasts through a playful and collaborative process of devising and writing. Daubeney and the company were awarded funding to support taking their show ‘Pleading Stupidity’ to the Edinburgh Fringe this year.
Ben O’Shea: Music video
Ben O’Shea (stage name Shea) is an LGBTQIA+ singer-songwriter and actor. With his original music he aims to bring authentic, truthful and relatable lyrics to listeners together with soulful vocals and catchy melodies. He has been awarded funding to create a music video for one of the songs in his new EP.
